My self help news paper has evolved a bit during the making and doing process. I was torn between having something that was informative about how to deal with low moods, and making something that represented my version of events when having a bit of a mental blip and the kind of things that help me. I have decided to go with what helps me, a dream like representation of day to day living with a furiously contradictory mind.
I want an ‘episode’ to come across transient and not a permanent fixture. I wanted something hopeful fleeting between the pages. The only way I could do this is with completely mindless collage, adding things in ripping them off, thinking of something to draw in its place. Until eventually, it begins to make sense. Like life, we make mistakes.
Each spread (there will be 5) has a theme. This is sisterhood and brotherhood, the need to have friends around you and to talk about your problems. It has a kinda Men are from Mars,Women are from Venus vibe about it. Us girlies need each other to talk and talk and taaaalk. Blokes are good with a pint and a knowing look, but brotherhood is equally important, those knowing silences leave a gap for communication - should they need it… anyway as I ramble in type, I also ramble in pen and ink, collage and printing until the page looks finished. It’s a train of thought rather than an informative publication. I just want it to feel familiar and like a hug to those who pick it up, without being completely gooey and ‘forever friend’ like. I hope that makes sense!
I’m still looking for writers to contribute. The text winds in and out of image and isn’t entirely coherent, but you will be in there somewhere. I’ve found a great blog for inspiration… it’s a lovely read: http://variousreasons.tumblr.com/ - thank you ‘girl’ i’m working on your spread next…
please note!!! all of this has a long way to go until it is finished (OF COURSE??!!!! FINISHED ARTICLES ARE FOR THAT WEBSITE I BUILD WHEN UNI IS OVER!!! WOOT!)
